Candlemaking is a hands-on, therapeutic activity that promotes mindfulness, emotional regulation, and community connection, which are protective factors against burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary trauma in social work.
When social workers are more emotionally regulated, supported, and creative, they make clearer decisions, can maintain empathy, and build stronger relationships with families, which directly improve outcomes for children.
Studies show that social worker burnout and turnover directly impact child welfare outcomes and lead to inconsistent case management and fractured relationships with families. Creative and mindfulness-based interventions reduce stress and increase job satisfaction.
